Job Details:

Roles and Duties
• Receive new patients and allocate them beds.
• Prepare and carry out ward rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
• Identify patient care requirements by establishing rapport with the patient as well as his/her relatives.
• Prepare patients and hand them over to the theatre nurse; and receive post operated patients from theatre staff; ALWAYS wait to GIVE and RECEIVE a report at the changing bay.
• Make beds for patients appropriately, disinfect beds after discharge; and always keep the ward clean and tidy all the time.
• Give bed bath to bed-ridden patients.
• Attend to and monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required i.e. daily weighing, observe feeding, chart exact amount taken, report etc
• Give and receive reports; both verbal and written reports when changing shifts.
• At Out Patient Unit:
• Receives new patients at triage, take and enter data in file maker, i.e. patients’ history, body weight, vital observations, height.
• Write request forms for x-rays, haemoglobin level, for new patients and follow ups.
• Dressing of wounds, removing fixators from patients, K-wires, using the aseptic technique.
• Assisting doctors in the consultation rooms, ushering in patients.
• Giving stat treatments.
• Directing patients where to go after attending to doctor.
• Lay the operating rooms ready to receive patients.
• Prepare instrument trolleys before surgery.
• Receive patients from the ward at the transfer bay and cross check using a surgical check list.
• Keep with the patient until patient is ready for surgery.
• Assist the surgeon during the operation.
• Act as a circulating nurse during operation.
• Pick drugs and consumables from the store administrator for distribution in the operating rooms.
• Prepare theatre for the next patient.
• Monitor patients’ vitals regularly and as per doctors’ instructions; and keep proper records until patient is stable

At the Hostel:
• Receive new patients and allocate them beds.
• Do rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
• Select patients and escort them to OPD or ward for review.
• Bed making and maintain the hostel clean and tidy.
• Attend and monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required i.e. supervising feeds, charting the exact amount taken, daily weighing, etc.
• Diploma in Nursing
• Certificate in First Aid
• Registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC)
• Computer literacy
• Other relevant qualification is an added advantage
• 2 years’ experience in a hospital setting.

• Good nursing care and communication skills.
