The Agricultural Business Initiative (aBi) is a social enterprise with the overall vision to contribute to 'a competitive and sustainable agriculture and agribusiness sector in Uganda in support of equitable wealth creation in Uganda'. aBi consists of two companies Limited by Guarantee; aBi Finance and aBi Development (formerly a Bi Trust). aBi Finance expands access to business finance for agricultural producers and agribusinesses by offering to Financial Institutions (Fls) financial incentives and infrastructure that make lending to the agricultural sector more attractive and less risky.
aBi Development Ltd channels development funding as matching grants and Business Development Services to agricultural producers and agribusinesses. Over the period 2014-18 alone, aBi Development implemented around 130 matching grant projects with a total estimated value of USh. 404bn to reach over 934,462 farmers and contributed to increasing employment, incomes and employment of Ugandan farmers and agribusinesses. aBi Development Ltd has also worked with farmer organisations and NGOs in order to serve the more vulnerable and less commercially developed value chain actors.
aBi seeks to fill the following position: CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER - aBi DEVELOPMENT LTD

The Chief Operating Officer, aBi Development is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for value chain development that will influence the sustainable development of agribusinesses and equitable wealth creation in Uganda. As part of Senior Management, s/he leads the aBi Development division made up of a team of value chain development experts and is accountable to the abi Development Management and Board for developing and implementing strategies for achievement of agreed business and annual work plan deliverables.
Your major role will be to provide thought leadership in agribusiness development; Ensuring development impact through Sustainability and Socially Responsible Investments (SSRI); Leading the identification and mitigation of key business risks; and management & motivation of the team. .

Key Roles & Responsibilities:
1. Thought Leadership, Quality & Learning: Lead the team in developing deep and ever-growing
Understanding of how agribusiness and value chain development can be leveraged to drivenequitable wealth creation in Uganda.
2. Strategy & Programming: As a member of aBi's senior management team, participate in the development of group strategy and lead the development of business plans for aBi Development.
3. Pipeline Development & Portfolio Management: Oversee pipeline development for a portfolio ofcommercial and grant investments that will deliver against business plans; whilst managing risks and optimizing return on investment.
4. Ensuring Impactful Implementation: Oversee the implementation of business plans so that results are achieved, risks are managed and quality projects are delivered; ensuring that learning from projects is fully utilised to develop broad and deep understanding of how to make agribusiness markets work for the poor.
5. Financial Sustainability: Support the financial sustainability of aBi by ensuring that aBiDevelopment is an efficient and effective investment vehicle and that financial resources are managed in accordance with a Bi's business plan and policies
6. Team Leadership: Lead the abi Development Team in a manner that empowers them to add value to the organisation and deliver high standards of performance

Educational Qualifications:
Masters in Agricultural Economics or Business Administration with 10 years working experience in a senior management role.
Job related experience and knowledge: You must be a recognised expert in value chain development in developing countries, especially within the agricultural sector with knowledge and experience in agricultural market development for business services. It will be advantageous if you have had an experience with smallholder development strategies and agriculture development and with experience in leading cross cultural, multi-functional teams for performance.
